GLOBAL LINKS - December 2010

Connect to the global church through elca.org

HAITI – HURRICANE TOMAS

Trailing storms of Tomas blanket the earthquake ravaged country with flooding rains, leaving over 1,000 homes destroyed and more damaged. Concerns are heightened as flood waters contaminate water sources and provide for the spread of cholera.  See www.elca.org/disaster.

INDONESIA – EARTHQUAKE, TSUNAMI AND VOLCANO AFFECT THOUSANDS

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake caused a tsunami in the Sumatra region while Mt. Merapi in central Java erupted, leaving 242 dead and almost 400,000 taking refuge in sheltering points in nearby towns. See www.elca.org/disaster.

KEEP THE PROMISE:  ADVENT IN A TIME OF AIDS

Read a daily reflection from writers such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson, and Jill Schumann of Lutheran Services of America, beginning with World AIDS Day and continuing through Epiphany, Jan. 6.  Download this online Advent calendar from the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance by following the link at http://www.elca.org/Our-Faith-In-Action/Justice/Poverty-Ministries/HIV-and-AIDS/Pray/Worship-Resources.aspx and choosing your desired language version (for example, EN = English).

SPONSORS INVITED

Dr. Mark and Linda Nygaard, missionaries in Cairo, Egypt, are in need of prayer and financial sponsors.  Mark is currently serving as the Coordinator at Graduate Studies at Evangelical Lutheran Seminary in Cairo. Sponsors from Western North Dakota and the Grand Canyon Synods are especially welcomed to minimize their travel time and maximize their effectiveness while on home leave.  For more information, visit www.elca.org/missionarysponsorship  or call 1-800-638-3522, ext. 2657.  See also the following devotional insert.

EPIPHANY GEOGRAPHY MAPPED OUR HEARTS

"It is not hard for me to imagine the pride I would feel if it were written in Holy Scriptures that the Holy Family had fled to my native North Dakota to be safe from the governor of Minnesota." Read this seasonal devotion by missionary Mark Nygard at www.elca.org/handinhand; click either the copy-ready bulletin insert or the Hand in Hand newsletter for Winter 2010.

MEET PASCUAL IN BOLIVIA
Pascual had an idea to make a living and escape poverty—he just needed a small start-up loan to get his business started. See http://www.elca.org/Our-Faith-In-Action/Responding-to-the-World/ELCA-World-Hunger/Stories.aspx.

MISSION SERVICE IN JAPAN

"At that moment I realized why God put me here."  Pr. Charles Fredrickson and Beth Borstad reflect on their years of service in Nagoya, Japan, with the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church.  See this video clip at http://blogs.elca.org/handinhand.

LUTHERAN PASTORS IN MALAWI

A pastor in Malawi speaks about what he and his colleagues learned using the Lutheran Study Bible and Martin Marty's Lutheran Questions, Lutheran Answers. See http://blogs.augsburgfortress.org/2010/11/22/more-from-lutheran-pastors-in-malawi/.

IN OUR PRAYERS

Thank God for the generosity of the 33 teachers, medical trainers, financial consultants and pastors who volunteered for three to 11 months through the ELCA Global Mission Volunteer program in 2010.  (This prayer from December 4 is available along with daily prayers from around the globe at http://archive.elca.org/prayerventures/.)
