Speaking of Faith
Speaking about our faith is awkward for many of us. And yet on occasion we realize we have missed an opportunity to give a word of hope or invitation to someone who is unchurched and struggling spiritually. Below are a variety of exercises to use in small group settings in your congregation to help members learn to articulate their faith and to gain confidence in sharing that faith with others at appropriate times.
Have a ‘faith question’ of the month. Open council/committee meetings by asking people to spend a few minutes writing down their response to a faith question. Ask volunteers to share their response. Use the newsletter to share the response of one or several members. Through the practice of forming a response and the sharing of the response we encourage one another in the faith! [Sample questions follow]
Faith Articulating Exercises
A favorite scripture passage is........because..................
I continue to be a Christian because........................
I regularly attend worship because..................
The faith community has responded by................when I have had a difficult loss in my life.
Four questions that a Christian should be able to respond to in his/her own words:
What do I believe about God and why? What does Christ mean to me? Why do I choose to be an active part of the church? How has my life been affected or changed because I am a Christian?
To help individuals make the connection between stories of the Bible and stories of today share a story of individuals or a situation today. Then ask triads to think of a corresponding Bible story and identify ways in which God was present then and is today.
